 r Ferrer\, my brother’s daughter’s son\, through the ether of an electro
 nic mail. That way I discovered his passionate temperament and the dough
 y darkness of his paintings. People say blood is thicker than water but 
 I believe more in the optional affinities than in those relations impose
 d by copulation and blood. I do not have much in common with the furies 
 and sorrows of a close family life\; I didn’t even know\, in the exile\,
  my father’s death date in Havana. But in Reynier’s words and images I h
 ave found decency and continuity. We are linked by blood\, the coming an
 d going of words and the revealing lies of a canvas body.   \nCuba\, lik
 e everything else\, has two faces: one full of colors and naive figures 
 and another one palpitating in a dark night. To my eyes ruled by memorie
 s\, Rey is a painter of roots in the hot mud. \nPamela\, an American fri
 end of his family\, took some of my nephew’s paintings to a gallery in P
 hiladelphia and the curator told her: “This is not Cuban painting\; wher
 e are the colors\, the tropical imagination?”  \nMany people remember th
 e impressionist painting La Jungla by Lam and they forget his pieces ful
 l of sinister threats\, they forget Rumor de la Tierra. Reynier also con
 tinues Guido Llinas’ subtle searches with passionate textures forty year
 s later. He is in love with the matter of feelings like Portocarrero or 
 Milián. His passionate naked imagination reveals the distant line of the
  horizon or the sinuous course of deep rivers murmuring in the caves tow
 ards the silent and eloquent lips of a woman.       \nMy nephew’s abstra
 ct paintings suggest to me concrete images\, precise feelings\, hence th
 e titles that came up when encountering his canvases\, which appeared fo
 r the first time in my computer like stained glasses a couple of years a
 go.     \nEven Martí was reflected in the tenderness of the shades and t
 he power of the darkness: “I have two homelands\, Cuba and the night”\, 
 “dark evenings attract me as if the extensive shadow is my homeland”.  \
 nIn our island there are murmuring feminine palm trees that give us life
  and wide ceibas where we can be hung.   \nMy favorite and contradictory
  image of our island was given to me by Neruda: “The scar covered by the

DESCRIPTION:Two years ago\, in Guatemala City\, Guatemala\, an explosion 
 in a building brought to light the archives of the secret police. This m
 eant that an investigation could commence into the hidden history of thi
 s Latin American country\, from the military coup of 1954 to the end of 
 the civil war in 1996. What happened\, for example\, to the approximatel
 y 45\,000 people who went missing? In this subdued film\, young Guatemal
 ans in white gloves and face masks work their way through the archives. 
 The U.S.-supported dictatorship had set up an extensive program of elimi
 nation against the opposition\, complete with death squads. Surviving re
 latives of untraceable "revolutionaries" and "communists" study document
 s that reveal the fate of their loved ones. It turns out that thousands 
 were dumped anonymously at a cemetery. The archive also contains horrifi
 c photographs of mutilated bodies\, and reports record the voltages used
  during torture. During interrogations\, the police cut wounds into the 
 soles of suspects who were then forced to walk over salt. A short film s
 hows young "subversive elements" disappearing into pits. The relatives a
 ppear more sad than embittered\, as they are relieved to finally have an
 swers. Calmly\, they talk about the facts that have come to light.

SUMMARY:Portraits in a Sea of Lies (Retratos en un mar de mentiras)
DESCRIPTION:After the death of their grandfather in a mudslide\, Jairo\, 
 an itinerant photographer\, and Marina\, his young amnesic and mute cous
 in\, decide to go back and try to recover the land from which she was di
 splaced years ago. They travel from Bogotá to the coast in an old beaten
  Renault.  During the trip\, the story of her traumatic past starts to u
 nfold. Upon reaching their hometown\, paramilitares kidnap them.  While 
 attempting to flee\, Jairo is wounded. Marina goes to the ruins of her f
 amily house and there she remembers  the killing of her family. She retu
 rns with the deed of their land\, but Jairo is fading fast. She takes hi
